The case for open radical cystectomy over robotic surgery in bladder cancer

Dickon Hayne, MBBS, MD, FRCS, FRACS, The University of Western Australia, Perth, Australia, discusses the current advantages of open radical cystectomy in bladder cancer. Whilst robotic cystectomy may result in less bleeding and shorter hospital stays, robotic surgery fails to completely replicate open radical cystectomy. More ureteral strictures are observed in robotic cystectomies, which adversely affects patients. Dr Hayne additionally highlights the need for cystectomies to be performed in high-volume centres for optimal results.
