WHY NOT STRAIGHT-IN?
Crystal clear skies, smooth air, and a destination that reminds you why you learned to fly in the first place. Today’s flight takes me to Rectory Farm, a private grass strip tucked alongside the River Trent on the Nottinghamshire–Lincolnshire border. It’s one of the most beautiful approaches I’ve flown in the UK. But there’s one small complication… A full-size power station sitting exactly where you don’t want it — right on final. In this video I’ll show you how I planned the offset approach, how the river becomes part of the strategy, and why obstacle awareness can completely change the way you fly a seemingly simple strip. On the way I demonstrate the surprisingly capable “big aircraft” avionics packed into my SportCruiser. and then once safely on the ground we’ll explore this stunning little farm airfield. I fly a 2011 Pipersport — also known as the PS28 in Europe or the SportCruiser in the USA, where it’s classed as an LSA. In the UK it’s a Part 21 aircraft, so it requires a full licence. It’s a fantastic little machine: affordable to run, fun to fly, cruising at around 100–105 knots, and with superb short-field performance. You’ll see me dropping into farm strips, backcountry fields, short runways — sometimes even international airports — always trying to learn something new along the way and brining you along with me for the ride. I fly both VFR and IFR, including visual and instrument approaches. But please remember: my videos are for entertainment only.
