As a young officer, Ferdinand von Zeppelin first encountered these strange but remarkable airships during a posting in America. At the age of 60, as a retired general, he made them the focus of his life. He set out to advance everything existing about airships, unaware that the concept of intercontinental travel would be irrevocably changed, and that these magnificent vehicles would ultimately be known as Zeppelins. Inspired by airships and their pioneer, the Zeppelin, I set off for the land where the story originated. Throughout the journey, I inevitably questioned how these vehicles, representing one of the strangest periods in human history, hadn't crossed my radar before. There were so many striking details and stories about their history that aviation history opened another door for me, and behind that door lay much to discover.
