Many singers have covered this song, including Elvis Presley, Sid Vicious, Frank Sinatra, and more, but Sinatra's rendition stands out as the most successful, topping the UK Singles Chart for a record-breaking 75 weeks, making it one of the most popular elegies in British. Originally, this song was a French composition titled "Comme d'habitude" (As Usual), jointly written by Claude François, Jacques Revaux, and Gilles Thibaut in 1967. Its lyrics differ significantly from the well-known English version. It tells the story of waking up one day to find that the lover beside him has passed away, Despite losing his beloved, he continues to do things as usual, such as covering her with a blanket and waiting for her to come back. During a vacation in the south of France, Paul Anka, who was born in Canada and is also an American singer, heard this song and subsequently traveled to Paris to negotiate its rights. He acquired adaptation, recording, and publishing rights for the nominal but formal consideration of one dollar, with the provision that the original composers would still be entitled to participate in future versions of the song and share related copyright royalties. Personally, I find the lyrics of this song quite inspirational.
