Taiwan was also referred to as "Formosa Island" by Europeans and Americans in its early days, with the Taiwan Strait being known as the "Formosa Strait." It is generally believed that in the mid-16th century, Portuguese sailors, upon encountering Taiwan, exclaimed in awe, shouting "Ilha Formosa!" which means "Beautiful Island" in Portuguese. The composer of this song, Chou Lan-Ping, relocated to Taiwan in 1949. Upon his arrival on the island, he was captivated by its lush beauty.
