Standing Before the Mount

Pastor Luke Higgs Midweek Prayer & Bible Study, Wednesday, May 27, 2026 Text: Exodus 20:18-26 Series: Shadows of the Saviour (Exodus 19-40) Missionary Bible Church Halifax, Nova Scotia http://www.mbchalifax.com/ Sermon Notes: In this week's Bible study, Pastor Luke examines Exodus 20:18-26, focusing on the Israelites' experience at the base of Mount Sinai and the theological implications of approaching a holy God. He draws connections to Hebrews 12 to explain how modern believers, under a new covenant, are called to respond to God's presence. A Call to Holiness (6:35-14:16): The Israelites’ trembling at the sight of God’s glory highlights the need for a mediator. While the Old Testament required distance, the New Testament introduces Jesus Christ as the perfect mediator, allowing believers to approach God's throne with reverence. The Nature of 'Fear' (14:53-20:56): Pastor Luke distinguishes between psychological fear (condemnation) and reverential fear (awe). God’s purpose in revealing His holiness is not to paralyze believers but to foster a healthy, reverential respect that leads to righteous living and turning away from sin. A Call to Dedication (28:15-33:45): Standing before God leaves no room for idols. Just as the Israelites were instructed not to make gods of silver or gold, believers today are called to dedicate their lives exclusively to Christ. A Call to Worship (33:46-41:02): The prohibitions regarding the construction of the altar (no human-hewn stone, no steps) serve as a reminder that man cannot add to the work of God. True worship is based on Christ's sacrifice, not human merit or self-righteousness. The sermon concludes by reminding us that when one truly catches a glimpse of the greatness of God, it changes our perspective, leading to a life defined by holiness, dedication, and sincere worship (41:03-42:45).
