The Parable of the Hidden Treasure

Pastor Luke Higgs Sunday Morning Service, June 28, 2026 Text: Matthew 13:44 Series: Parables of the Kingdom (Matthew) Missionary Bible Church Halifax, Nova Scotia http://www.mbchalifax.com/ Sermon Notes: In this sermon, Pastor Luke explores the Parable of the Hidden Treasure (Matthew 13:44). He emphasizes that contrary to some interpretations where a person finds salvation through their own efforts, this parable illustrates Christ’s work of redemption. He highlights that Jesus is the man in the field who sacrificially gave everything—including his own life—to purchase the treasure, which represents His redeemed people. The Incredible Value of God’s People (10:40): Pastor Luke explains that God places immense personal value on each individual. While we may not feel worthy, from Christ's perspective, we are worth the price paid on the cross. The Imperceptible Hiding Place (16:47): He notes that the "hiding" of the treasure in the field points to the safety and security believers have in Christ. Despite the corruption and difficulties in the world, God's people remain protected in Him. The Joy of the Purchase (21:07): A central theme is that Jesus endured the cross for the "joy set before Him"—the joy of owning and ultimately being with His redeemed treasure (22:44). The All-Inclusiveness of His Purchase (26:11): Pastor Luke explains that just as the man bought the whole field, Christ's sacrifice on the cross is sufficient for the entire world. However, he clarifies that while the offer of salvation is universal, it must be personally accepted through faith to be effective. Pastor Luke concludes with a heartfelt call to those who have not yet believed, reminding the congregation that salvation is a gift from God that requires personal trust in the Saviour (30:43).
