The La Viñuela reservoir in the hinterland of Malaga is the most important water reservoir in the southern Spanish province. It is now only 11 percent full – a disaster for the local people, who fear for their livelihoods. Tourism and agriculture are the region's major economic sectors. Tour operator Elena Sanchis is unable to offer stand-up paddleboarding and kayaking tours for the first time in eight years and fears that tourists will eventually stop coming to the region altogether. Paul Llamas worries about the lack of recreation due to the absence of rain in spring and autumn. And already, more and more plants are withering in the fields. At the same time, the region is home to one of the largest growing areas for water-intensive avocados. Ecologist Rafael Yus believes agriculture shares some of the responsibility, as too much water has been extracted for it in recent years.
