Julio Galán at KURIMANZUTTO and LUHRING AUGUSTINE
James Kalm remembers the work of Julio Galán from seeing it in New York during the whirlwind period of the emergence of Neo-Expressionism and the Trans-avantgarde. Something about its baroque symbolism, Surrealist narratives, and faux antiquated materialism, stuck in his mind. So, when your correspondent happened upon a double show, he decides to record the presentation. Julio Galán (1958-2006) was born on Northern Mexico, and came to New York in the early 1980s. As a unique proponent of the Latin American Trans-Avantgarde he showed internationally, was associated with Andy Warhol’s Interview Magazine, and received critical attention. Tragically in 2006, Galán died during a plane flight that was taking him back to Monterrey after suffering a brain hemorrhage on December 5, 2006, he was 46 years old. In the twenty years since his passing, there have been very few opportunities to see the work in New York, and this double show is a fitting retrospective. This program was recorded April 3 and 12, 2025. A musical introduction is provided by EVERY THING WILL BE OKAY. #jameskalmreport #jameskalmroughcut #lorenmunk
