In this video, Dr. Praveen Kammar (Consultant Surgical Oncologist, SSO Hospital, Mumbai) talks to us about whether gallstones cause gallbladder cancer. Gallstones are a risk factor for gallbladder cancer. Out of 5 gallbladder cancer patients, 4 have gallstones problem. This tells us that gallbladder cancer has a close relation to gallstones. Only 1% of the patients with gallstones are detected with gallbladder cancer. But why do gallstones cause gallbladder cancer? Scientifically it is found that when the gallstone grows bigger than 3 cm in the body it creates a risk of gallbladder cancer. Therefore, it is advised that people should identify the early symptoms of gallbladder stones at the beginning itself. If the gallstone is smaller than 2 cm and does not show any complications, it is not necessary to treat such gallstones surgically. If the gallbladder stones are to be treated surgically then doctors use methods such as keyhole surgery or laparoscopic surgery which have proved to give excellent results.
