The Longest Ferry Ride of Lake Como | Part 2: Mediterranean Vibes
Today we'll be going on a ferry ride on Lake Como, the world renowned lake in northern Italy. This isn't just any ride though, but the longest one that you can possibly experience on the lake! It clocks in at 4 hours and 36 minutes (at least when this video was recorded, it might be slightly longer or shorter depending on the stops along the way) and has a total lenght of about 70 km (43 miles or so). You can take this ride both ways, but this is how it looks while heading north. :) We'll depart from the city of Como, at the bottom of the western branch of the lake, and arrive in Colico, a town located almost at the very top! Since it's quite a long voyage, it's going to be split into 4 different videos, as it follows: Part 1 ( • The Longest Ferry Ride of Lake Como | Part... ) is from Como to Nesso, the so called 'first basin' of the lake; Part 2 (this one) will be from Nesso to Tremezzo, crossing through the 'oil basin' and its lush Mediterranean vegetation; Part 3 is going to be from Tremezzo to Dervio, while visiting the ''big 3'' locations of Lake Como: Bellagio, Varenna and Menaggio; Finally part 4 will be from Dervio to Colico, a peaceful and windy ride exploring the far north of the lake! Time to talk a bit about this second section. ^.^ After picking up where we left off last time we kept heading north, soon making an important stop in the always busy town of Argegno. Up until here everything still looks fairly similar to part 1, but we are about to enter a brand new area of the lake, one with a completely different vibe than the 'first basin' (and last stretch until Argegno)! Said area consists mainly of the western shore, from the village of Colonno up to the hamlet of Cadenabbia. This is a very crowded location, with many old towns in a row and very little space to fit them all! It's a quick succession of quaint residential areas, gorgeous villas, lush gardens and many olive groves. Yes, you read that right, olives. :) Usually a Mediterranean plant, olive trees grow really well here and you can see them scattered basically everywhere! This is due to a particularly temperate climate, which is warmer than most other areas of the region. Remember, the alps aren't that far north from the lake! Technically speaking the 'oil basin' (called 'Zoca de l'Oli' in the local dialect) is the name of the inlet between Comacina Island and the nearby shore. Said name actually doesn't come from olive oil though, but from the lake itself! That's because the waters of the inlet are very flat and placid, almost resembling an oily surface. That being said, olive oil is produced around here as well, although in relatively small quantities. It's a section of Lake Como full of wonders and amazing views, which will not dissapoint! What are we waiting for? Let's check it out! P.s.: while this might be the longest ferry ride of the lake, the ferry won't actually stop at every dock along the way. In fact in part 2 we sailed past Colonno, Campo and Cadenabbia without stopping there. The first two are small places that are reached only by few ferries each day. Cadenabbia is instead a pretty big stop, but it's currently only serviced by the car ferries coming from Bellagio and Varenna, since those can carry passengers as well.
