Despite all efforts, Göktay could not be saved and passed away at the age of 81. His body was first brought to the Harbiye Muhsin Ertuğrul Stage for a memorial ceremony. Following the ceremony, Göktay's coffin, draped in the Turkish flag, was brought to the Şakirin Mosque in Üsküdar. After the funeral prayer held at the Şakirin Mosque following the noon prayer, Göktay's body was taken to Karacaahmet Cemetery for burial. "He didn't leave a will, he left us, his children." Speaking at the funeral, Zihni Göktay's son, Ömer Göktay, said, "He spent his last two or three days in intensive care. He was admitted to intensive care. He passed away due to heart failure, but the triggering factor was a fractured hip bone. After that, he became completely immobile for six months. Physical therapy was done, but he mentally shut himself down. Then he was intubated. We met the day before he died. He didn't leave a will, he left us, his children, to the institution. But in his spare time, he took great care of us, gave me a wonderful childhood, and raised me as a very happy girl. I was a spoiled little girl who grew up with her father. Now it's time for me to grow up. He went to be with my mother. I had one angel, now I have two. I know he will continue to support me from there. He planted beautiful seeds in the hearts of many people. And I see this even more clearly these days. May he rest in peace. He left behind a great surname as a legacy. Now, protecting and keeping it alive is our greatest responsibility. Our burden has increased, but it is a very beautiful burden. A burden I will be proud to carry."
