Acampamento Farroupilha: A incrível Cidade do Churrasco
The barbecue is the highlight of Camp Farroupilha, an event that takes place every year, from September 7 to 22, in Porto Alegre, capital of the state of Rio Grande do Sul, in southern Brazil. The camp is a tribute to the Farroupilha Revolution, a movement that took place in the nineteenth century with the intention of liberating the region from the central power of the country. In 2019 there were over 300 "Piquetes" (houses / sheds of unworked timber), making the camp a true city apart. Every day, in the different "Piquetes", and also in restaurants, at any time, there is always meat roasting on ground fire. The barbecue made with whole beef ribs, the "Costelão", is a favorite. The ribs are baked for a long time, at least 12 hours, in slow heat. Sheep, chicken and pork are also part of the menu, which also includes dishes such as Carreteiro (rice with beef jerky), "Sheep Espinhaço" with cassava and Entrevero, a mixture of different meats and spices. Also always present, as a main course entree, the salsichão ( a kind of sausage) or the sausage.
