Episode 1279 Annie’s (Doris Speed) opinion of Ethel (Pearl Hackney) drops when she reveals she once worked as a cleaner. Herbert (Llewellyn Rees) plans to tackle the full 270-mile Pennine Way, which makes Albert (Jack Howarth) insist on taking on the challenge as well. Ken (Bill Roache) worries it would be too much for the 77-year-old man. Elsie (Pat Phoenix) sets Maggie (Irene Sutcliffe) straight about Mike (Murray Kash) and explains that Alf (Bryan Mosley) wasn’t to blame, but Maggie is still angry at Alf and accuses him of trying to meddle in her affairs. Emily (Eileen Derbyshire) tells Rita (Barbara Knox) that her photo orders have been cancelled after wives objected to pictures bought by their husbands. Norma (Diana Davies) is alarmed to find a mouse in the corner shop storeroom. Annie makes no secret of her low opinion of Ethel, but Alf reminds her that Ethel achieved more in her year as mayoress than anyone. Ken asks Herbert to dissuade Albert from attempting the walk, but he refuses as he doesn’t believe Albert would even last four miles. Ken has his doubts, knowing how stubborn Albert is.
