Bluebrixx BR 18 8w (Bayr. S 3/6) - Kein Stein bleibt auf dem anderen - MOD/Rebuild der Rheingold-Lok
(Turn on subtitles) In this video, I'll show you how to transform the Bluebrixx "BR 18" model, a complete disaster from a model-making perspective, into a highly recognizable gem: a Bavarian S 3/6, later the DRG BR 18.5 – THE locomotive for the quintessential German dream train, the "Rheingold" of the Roaring Twenties. The model's noise level and rather poor running characteristics have since been improved. While there are good reasons to assume the Bluebrixx model is a Bavarian S 3/6, there were also Saxon, Württemberg, and Baden BR 18s. Later conversions and one-off locomotives with a 2'C'1 wheel arrangement were also incorporated into the Class 18. The S 3/6 was certainly the most famous of these classes or locomotives. ` ... Even though the locomotive I've depicted here in this model never actually pulled a Rheingold train, it was locomotives of the BR 18.5 series that were granted this honor. These were, however, locomotives from the later series l, m, n, and o. The BR 18 505, preserved at the Neustadt/Weinstraße Railway Museum, was not one of these, being a locomotive of the "k" series, nor was the BR 18 504, released by Fleischmann as an HO model of the DRG. Nevertheless, the BR 18 505 was for many years THE locomotive used to pull historic Rheingold trains. The biggest drawback of the Bluebrixx model is its much too small wheels, but also its overall scale. This scale is too small in relation to the BR 78 and the converted passenger cars used as references, meaning the locomotive can only be used as a modified 7-8 wide model. This also has the advantage that the Bluebrixx Rheingold carriages only need to be widened to 7-wide and raised by one baseplate height to fit the locomotive perfectly. This results in a moderate increase in weight, so the locomotive should be able to pull a train of at least 4-5 carriages. For the coupling wheels, I can wholeheartedly recommend XXL wheels from Big Ben Bricks, which are injection-molded and look and feel just like Lego wheels. http://www.bigbenbricks.com/products/... Unfortunately, their color is a bit too dark, so you'll need to treat them with something like edding spray paint in glossy traffic red, RAL 3020. They also lack recesses for traction rings. However, these can easily be added yourself. I use the blade of a jigsaw and a drill with a cross-shaft attached. Of course, painting should only be done afterward. Less recommendable because they are manufactured using 3D printing, resulting in a coarser finish (especially around the spokes) and corresponding artifacts, are the MS wheels from bricks-on-rails. Their color is too light and too dull, so they should also be treated with the spray paint mentioned above. https://www.bricks-on-rails.de/produc... However, the MS wheels are indispensable for the construction of the leading locomotive because their slim design allows them to be installed behind the cylinder assembly. The disadvantages are the narrow tread and the low wheel rim height, which necessitate additional weighting and other support structures to prevent derailments. https://www.bricks-on-rails.de/produc... However, the MS wheels are the only option for the leading locomotive's construction because their slim design allows them to be installed behind the cylinder assembly.
