Bootha Kola, also known as the worship of Daivas or Demi-Gods, is an ancient ritual practiced by the Tulu-speaking community in the Dakshina Kannada district of Karnataka and the Kasargod Taluk in Kerala, collectively called Tulu Nadu. In Kerala, a similar tradition is known as Theyyam. This tradition dates back to 700-800 BC coinciding with the immigration of the Early Tulu tribes who introduced the initial cults of Bermer (also pronounced as 'Birmer' or 'Bermeru') and Panjurli. In Udupi and Mangalore, Bhuta Kola is a lively spirit dance performed from December to May. "Daiva" or "Bootha" refers to supernatural spirits, and "Kola" is the ceremony held to honor and seek help from these spirits. In essence, Bootha Kola is a way to ask for blessings and protection from these powerful beings, making it an ancient form of spirit worship. The rituals are carried out to gain the favor and protection of the Daivas, who are often worshipped in the form of idols kept in a special shrine called a Daivasana. Some well-known Daivas include Jumadi, Jarandaya, Kallurti, Kalkuda, Guliga, and Panjurli. These spirits are believed to be powerful forces that grant blessings when worshipped properly. However, they must be treated with great respect, as their anger can bring harm.
