Archaeologists have engaged in extensive debates about the veracity of the biblical account. Some, reviewing the archaeological evidence, have concluded that there was never a conquest of the land of Canaan as described in the Bible. Others, analyzing the Bible, archaeology, and the geography of Israel, have concluded that the biblical account is true. Personally, visiting the ruins of Ai, I cannot help but praise God, for His Word is entirely trustworthy. At Ai, the people of Israel suffered a severe setback—a defeat that hit them hard. And although it was not a crushing defeat, everyone's spirits sank deeply. Fear gripped their hearts. They feared the worst. But God revealed to them that the defeat was due to an enemy within. Someone inside the Israelite camp had taken part of the accursed thing.
