BEECH MOUNTAIN WEST RIDGE TRAIL Steeply Up beside Long Pond The trails on the west side of Mount Desert Island, less travelled and polished, have significantly less promotion despite being as dynamic. On western Beech Mountain, WEST RIDGE TRAIL rises steeply alongside Long Pond with some incredible views, many stone steps, and terraced climbs. If a picture is worth 1000 words...what's a video worth? *KNOW WHAT TO EXPECT ON THE TRAIL* see the Terrain, Trailheads, Views, and Intersecting Trails... NATURE!!! Beginning at the south end of Long Pond, the trail begins with Long Pond on the left and forest to the right on a level broken stone path. As the trail turns east, it passes past two houses. The park border map shows this section not in the park, respect for private property is important as the trail climbs tiered path and stone steps before descending beck to the water's edge. Back beside Long Pond, bridges cross mountain runoff creeks and a boardwalk provides protection for the fragile pond's edge before the trail turns a second time into the woods. There a dirt path descends and ascends slopes that rise and fall to more creeks with atone steps and arrives at tiered ascent signaling the start of the climbing. The climb begins up steep glacially smoothed granite arriving at a set of wood framed steps followed by more tiers and granite. Here, a break in the trees gives a first overview of Long Pong before continuing up over roots and rocks preceding uneven granite. Continuing up, the terrain is a mix of granite slabs, tiered paths, and uneven granite - arriving at the next break in the trees revealing an overview of the entirety of Long Pond. Following the view, the final ascent up to the trailhead is familiar terrain. Now bordered by blueberry bushes, the remaining climb is steeper yet, but in short order the trailhead on BEECH MOUNTAIN LOOP TRAIL is reached and the choices for descent are numerous and of varied difficulty. I hope my efforts make your watching experience AND your next visit to ACADIA NATIONAL PARK ... wicked awesome! FRIENDLY REMINDER: no matter the difficulty, hiking has risks... HAVE A PLAN... the best times are had when planned properly. Alternate, shorter routes than what you intend to hike are abundant in Acadia... your hiking plan can include them as contingencies. Injuries can happen, let others know your planned route and timeframe... cell service is spotty in Acadia National Park. Remember: know your limits so you can push them, and DEFINITELY REMEMBER: what goes up must come down which includes you...
