Akalis finally decided to boycott and oppose the Asian games fortnight before the games were set to begin paving way for massive crackdown of agitationists all across the Akali and Sikh spectrum. Haryana especially saw heavy handed and humiliating treatment of Sikh protestors passing through it to reach Delhi. The situation was somehow curtailed as Asian games went off well amidst heavy deployment of forces to ward off any protests. However the short-sighted success in thwarting Akalis from active protest against game was a fairly limited gain once one considers the colletaral damage in the succeeding months culminating in Operation Blue Star.
