A calm and reflective few hours spent paddling along the River Medway through Tonbridge. This was my first paddle of 2026 after what felt like a long winter, making it all the more rewarding to be back out on the water. Despite the cold air and constant dampness, the river's stillness and the quiet surroundings made for a surprisingly enjoyable escape. Grey skies hung overhead, but the gentle flow of the water brought a real sense of calm. This paddle wasn’t about distance or speed—just easing back into it, soaking up the peaceful atmosphere, and appreciating the simple rhythm of being on the river again. Even in chilly, wet conditions, it was a reminder of why getting out there is always worth it. This is a route I often use to test out my kayaks and gear, but this time it was more about testing myself. After a long break, I wanted to see how my mobility held up before committing to longer days out on the water. I did find it a bit of a struggle at times, though the conditions didn’t help—I could’ve chosen a better day and definitely dressed warmer. The cold really got into my legs and back, making it more challenging than expected.
