On July 10, 1976, a reactor failure at the Icmesa plant in Seveso released a toxic cloud of TCDD (dioxin), one of the world's most lethal poisons. The plant was closed eight days later, and the area evacuated after two weeks. The population lived unaware, breathing contaminated air. The consequences: 700 displaced people, 200 cases of chloracne, animals exterminated, homes demolished. The most contaminated area became the Bosco delle Querce.
