From Il-76 to An-124: The Hidden World of Russian Military Transport
Official data on Russia’s military transport aviation fleet remains strictly concealed, leaving foreign analysts and open-source researchers to piece together estimates that often vary widely. Despite its reputation as a major air power, Russia’s military airlift capabilities are heavily reliant on aging Soviet-era aircraft, with modern replacements arriving slowly—or not at all. Key aircraft like the Il-76 remain the backbone of Russia’s air transport, with estimates suggesting over 130 units in service, including updated Il-76MD-90A versions. The colossal An-124 “Ruslan” remains unmatched for heavy cargo, but only about a dozen are reportedly operational, while the rest sit in storage. Other types, such as the An-26, An-12, and An-72, continue to serve across the Russian Aerospace Forces (VKS), Navy, Border Troops, and National Guard, but many are decades old and increasingly costly to maintain. Smaller aircraft like the L-410 and An-2 remain in limited service, and even older Tupolev models like the Tu-154 and Tu-134 still fly military and security missions. Western sources estimate Russia operates between 650 and 700 transport aircraft in total (excluding the smallest planes), underscoring a vast yet aging fleet. Modernization is slow: currently, only the Il-76MD-90A is in serial production, while other aircraft types await replacements that may not arrive until the early 2030s. The lack of official data and dependence on foreign estimates makes assessing Russia’s true airlift capability a challenge. However, one fact is clear: maintaining and modernizing this diverse but aging fleet remains a critical issue for Russia’s military logistics and strategic mobility in the years ahead. #Russia #MilitaryAviation #TransportAircraft #RussianAirForce #Il76 #Il76MD90A #An124 #An22 #An26 #An32 #An24RV #An12 #An72 #An140 #An148 #Tu154 #Tu134 #L410 #An2 #SovietAircraft #MilitaryTransport #AviationAnalysis #DefenseNews #RussianMilitary #AviationHistory #MilitaryLogistics Be a Member for exclusive privileges - / @altitudeaddicts Twitter : https://x.com/AltitudeAddicts Website: https://www.altitudeaddicts.com
