Purna Das Baul is one of the most notable Baul Singers from Bengal. He is fondly regarded as the Baul Samrat which literally means the King of Bauls. Baul Songs occupy a large section of Bengali Folk Songs, probably the biggest Folk genre within the domain of Bengali Songs. The Bauls are a group of mystic minstrels from Bengal which includes Indian State of West Bengal and the country of Bangladesh. Bauls constitute both a religious sect and a musical tradition. Bauls are a very heterogeneous group, with many sects, but their membership mainly consists of Vaishnava Hindus and Sufi Muslims. They can often be identified by their distinctive clothes and musical instruments. Lalon Fokir is regarded as the most important poet-practitioner of the Baul tradition. Baul music had a great influence on Rabindranath Tagore's poetry and on his music. Baul Songs celebrate celestial love, but does this in very earthy terms, as in declarations of love by the Baul for his partner. With such a liberal interpretation of love, it is only natural that Baul devotional music transcends religion and some of the most famous baul composers, such as Lalon Fokir, criticized the superficiality of religious divisions. Born in 1933 in Birbhum district, West Bengal, India, Purna Das Baul is the son of legendary Nabini Das Kapha Baul and was born in the village of Ekchakka near Rampurhat in the Birbhum District of West Bengal. Purna Das Baul can be single handedly credited for spreading Baul Songs all over the world. This format of Bengali Folk Songs are derived from the sexo yogic tradition of the Bauls and almost always has a double or a triple layer of meanings. Purna Das Baul not only spread the music of Bauls across the globe but actually took it one step further by collaborating with legends like Bob Dylan and George Harrison. Purna Das Baul has been awarded with many awards in his life, one of the most notable amongst them was the President’s Award.
