Making Goat Milk Tallow soap is super simple | Recipe & method
important info below NB: PLEASE TAKE ALL NECESSARY SAFETY PRECAUTIONS WHEN WORKING WITH LYE IT IS A DANGEROUS CAUSTIC INGREDIENT - please wear eye protection and gloves! recipe: 600g tallow 112.50g coconut oil 37.5g castor oil 105g lye 258g frozen goat milk 15g essential oils The lye & goat milk solution should get to around 30C. ALWAYS add the lye onto your liquid/ frozen water or milk bit by bit and never the other way around as this can cause a dangerous reaction. Add your heated oils & lye together when both are close to 30C, within 10C of each other. But err on the cooler side to be safe! You want to make goat milk soaps on the cooler side, with cooler temperatures than other cold process soap making recipes. NB NB BE SURE to refrigerate this overnight in the fridge to ensure the soap doesn't overheat in gel phase as it sets in the mould, it needs to be kept cooler, the natural sugars in the goat milk are going to cause a rapid heating if not cooled which can cause your soap to crack, or literally erupt out of the mould. In this recipe, I've used Lemongrass Essential Oil and about a teaspoon of activated charcoal, added in when the soap is at a light trace. I did not spray the soap well enough with isopropyl alcohol so it resulted in a little soda ash. This can be sorted out by steaming the soap once it's set and ready to be cut. Although saponification should be complete within 48 to 72 hours after making soap, you do have to remember that they need to cure for at least 2 to 4 weeks, even 6 weeks. The longer cure time, the better the soap performs in the long run. The curing process is basically just the evaporation of water from the soap, resulting in a soap that is drier and therefore will last longer once it has been exposed to water, less likely to become mushy when used. The lather experience also improves with a longer curing time. The pH of the soap also stabilizes during this time.
