About The Chapel Royal: The Chapel Royal, Dublin Castle was designed by the prolific Irish architect Francis Johnston in 1807, opening on Christmas Day 1814. The 19th-century chapel served the Lord Lieutenant or Viceroy, who resided in the State Apartments and represented the English monarchy in Ireland until 1922. The first Catholic mass took place at the Chapel Royal in 1943. It underwent rigorous restoration, and the renovated chapel was unveiled at an ecumenical service marking the opening of the 1990 European Presidency. Since reopening, it has hosted a variety of events, performances, and filmmaking, but not any religious services.
