Snowdon in March?! A Brutal Surprise on the Watkin Path

I thought this would be a spring hike up Snowdon/ Yr Wyddfa… but March had other plans. This is my third time hiking Snowdon this year, and once again, it was completely different. Starting from Nant Gwynant, the Watkin Path takes you through some of the most beautiful scenery in Snowdonia: ancient woodland, waterfalls, the famous Watkin Pools, and remnants of old slate mining history. The lower part of the route felt like spring had already arrived—quiet, green, and peaceful. But higher up, everything changed. Snow appeared much earlier than expected, the terrain became steep and loose, and by the time I reached Bwlch y Saethau, it felt like a proper winter hike. With fog rolling in and tricky navigation, it turned into a much more serious day than I had planned. From sunshine to snow, from calm to challenging—this hike was a perfect reminder that the mountains don’t follow the seasons the way we expect them to.
