SKODA KAMIQ – Test Drive on Arrancamos!? (2020) The Skoda Kamiq arrives on Arrancamos!? without much fanfare, but confident in its potential in a market that increasingly demands SUVs. Based on the platform of its cousins like the SEAT Arona and VW T-Cross, the Czech firm has managed to design a B-segment SUV that is slightly longer than the Arona, gaining interior space, but maintaining its 400-liter trunk. Very well-rounded, we tested the 1.6 TDI 115-horsepower diesel engine with a manual transmission. Let's get started!? Despite its SUV designation, we think without hesitation that it is practically the minivan version that would fit between the Fabia and the Escala, as its off-road capability is limited due to a height very similar to a compact car, and it lacks both 4x4 traction and any driver assistance system like Grip Control. Its interior dimensions and 400-liter trunk capacity make it much closer to a minivan than an SUV, but trends are trends, and sales, along with marketing, are what dictate the terms. Starting at €14,900 with financing, the Skoda Kamiq is a very appealing car, the perfect urban SUV, as the brand's advertising proclaims… until new second-generation rivals like the Renault Captur and Peugeot 2008 emerged, which have grown not only in size but also offer solutions that rival even higher segments. The version we tested, the 1.6 TDI with 115 horsepower and a manual transmission, seems perfect for everyday use, but also for those who know they'll be traveling frequently in a car that, in theory, is designed solely for city driving. We could even pay the extra €1,600 for the DSG automatic transmission, which would surely be a perfect match for this body style. However, the €27,035 price tag for the Skoda Kamiq in the configuration we tested seems exorbitant, placing it in higher segments with larger, more substantial cars. It's true that the Style trim is the most complete, along with the Sport, each emphasizing luxury and sportiness, respectively, but the Active and Ambition trims can also be suitable depending on your needs. While the advertised price of €14,900 is a financed offer, thanks to a discount of over €4,000 off the list price, the engine's performance seemed reasonable. It's true that at low revs you feel like killing it; it's rough, throaty, even noisy, and sluggish below 2,000 rpm… but then you see that it doesn't exceed 5 liters per 100 kilometers in combined driving, and you forget all about it. It's fantastic on the highway, although the soundproofing could be improved, though it's not as awful as in its cousin, the Arona, which it surpasses by 12 centimeters. From a standstill, it takes a little over 10 seconds to reach 100 km/h, and you can definitely feel its weight of over 1,260 kg. It's surprising that, given the VW Group's resources, it only offers one diesel engine, a 115 hp unit. This is offset by the gasoline options of 95, 115, and 150 hp, plus the CNG option, which is currently arriving at dealerships and becomes an alternative to diesel for those who need the Eco label or simply prefer a more environmentally friendly car. This Skoda Kamiq will undoubtedly be the first choice for many city dwellers who are drawn to cars like the Ibiza, Escala, and Polo, but can't afford the Leon or Golf, or even the Karoq, but need more space than those in the B segment. And the Kamiq is the perfect solution to their "problems," even more so than the Arona in terms of interior space. On the "Would I Buy It?" scale, the Skoda Kamiq scores an 8.3. We enjoyed testing a sensible and unpretentious engine, despite those who demonize diesel, and seeing that it handles almost all situations well… although more power, especially at lower revs, would have been welcome. At 4.24 meters long, it manages to offer plenty of space for its rear passengers and a truly impressive trunk, although it's already small compared to the competition. It more than earns a respectable score, and the price is the main factor that brings down the final score.
