Sign In Stranger for solo piano
Solo piano arrangement of Sign In Stranger, a track from the 1975 Steely Dan album The Royal Scam, a vinyl copy of which is propped up on the piano. The song is written by Donald Fagen and Walter Becker and is a weird fusion of blues and reggae that moves between the chords of G minor 7 and C major, goes into C minor for the middle eight and then modulates into D for the outro. I’ve tried to copy the piano comping and bluesy flourishes of the late, great Paul Griffin, who plays piano on this one track (he also played on Dylan’s Highway 51 Revisited, Don McLean’s American Pie, and countless recordings by the likes of Paul Simon, Roberta Flack, Solomon Burke, Laura Nyro, John Lennon and Yoko Ono).
