Restoring and running a historic estate isn’t all fairy-tale chateaus and perfect gardens — it’s full of challenges, surprises, and tough financial choices. In this video, we’re opening up about the realities of money and what it takes to keep our estate dream alive. Since the day we fell in love with this estate, every decision has counted. With a very small budget, we knew we could only renovate one cottage if we did the work ourselves so we could rent out long-term and help fund the ongoing work. Social media quickly became a lifeline — and allowed us to rent that cottage as Holiday Accommodation, sometimes a push to work even harder! The TV show gave us a cash injection, which allowed the restoration of the Stables however we made the decision remortgage and buy the Dower House to keep our life private, but this year, changing mortgage rates and rising costs made things tougher than ever. We had to make the emotional decision to sell a Cottage — a hard choice, but one that allowed its restoration to continue with a new family.
