Hardwick Hall is an Elizabethan house built between 1590 and 1597 by the second wealthiest lady in the land, Bess Hardwick. It is architecturally significant as there is more glass than wall, a statement of her wealth and power. The design demonstrated new concepts as it was the first English house to have a great hall built on an axis in the centre of the home, rather than right angles to the entrance.
