19th century Gothic mansion inspired by astrology & art, rebuilt after a fire in 1877
Mount Stuart was originally built in 1719 but was damaged by a fire in 1877. Most of its contents survived along with the wings of the building which were incorporated into the house you see today. Twenty different types of marble were used with the design inspired by astrology. The marble chapel flooring is typical of the architecture of medieval Italy and the same style can be found in the Sistine Chapel and London's Westminster Abbey.
