Estero de la antigua salina de “Los Desamparados” de Puerto Real (Cádiz)

The former saltworks of "Los Desamparados" in Puerto Real (Cádiz) is currently an extensive, natural fish farm. According to analyses carried out by researchers from the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC), its waters have high levels of solid pollutants due to the influx of fishmeal and other fecal waste from intensive aquaculture when water is drawn from the San Pedro River. This is one of the few remaining fish farming and fattening sites that operate using traditional methods, solely through the capture of specimens and marine feed, taking advantage of the intertidal flow. The management of the Bay of Cádiz and Los Toruños Natural Parks, as the ultimate authorities responsible for environmental conservation, denies that there are any clear causes for the situation, or even that the situation exists at all. The 50 hectares of the 60-year concession granted to Derqui are not the only areas affected by fish scarcity. Manuel manages two other extensive fish farms in the La Carraca channel, which are in an even worse situation. Speakers: José María Jiménez-Derqui (Manager of the “Estero de Los Desamparados” wetland), Joaquín Palma (Member of “Ecologistas en Acción”), Antonio Gómez (Director of the “Parque Natural Bahía de Cádiz” natural park), Manuel Agüera (Manager of the “El Pólulo” and “San Diego” wetland wetland areas).
