The six sets have a plastic insert, the 12 sets have the half pans loose Swatching: Blick Studio Cottonrag Paper Starting with Ocean Colors Looking for: Activation Opacity Granulation Wash Out Liftability These have potential, I want to play around with them a bit more. My experiences with these (probably) dye based watercolors, like the Seamiart, or the XileyW, or the Artibox, or even the Coolbank is that they're ok (no granulation, a bit boring and flat) when used in masstone, but fall apart so fast with water and get used up really fast. They are definitely cheap, but they're cheap in other ways, and I really can't recommend them, even at that price point. These are at least a little more interesting than some of the really flat dye based watercolors I've reviewed Pearlescent Colors: Looking at: Activation Opacity Shimmer Color Payoff Special effects Pearlescent palette: Interesting color selection, some almost duochrome colors, but these are definitely dye-based, and don't have that liquid metal look I'd like. When you preactivate them, the dye seems to seep out and pool on top? Not the case for all the colors, but definitely the case for the duochrome black and green Starry Color These are a little more difficult to activate than the Pearlescent colors- maybe its an older palette and has been sitting around? These are a bit better, but the color palette when it dries is kinda weak. Gem Color These were surprisingly difficult to activate, and I had to really scrub to get color. The colors are fine, I like the large flake gold, that's fun, but most of the brighter colors are very dye based, and it's not like the mica really picked up the color that well. These are both ehhh? For the price, they're fine for metallic watercolors? Not the worst, not the best. Better metallics: Finetec Pros and Cons: Pros: The Ocean Colors set, while it has SERIOUS drawbacks, also has some interesting possibilities The Ocean Colors set is a bit more unusual, especially for these cheap dye based watercolors. The metallic sets are fine. Not liquid metal, not that saturated, but they can add a pearlescent shimmer to your work Cons: The pearlescents are weak in terms of shimmer. The most interesting thing is the gold flake, everything else is much weaker The Ocean set basically can't take any water or it falls apart The Verdict: I'm not impressed with these. The Ocean colors are at least interesting, and I'll play with them more in the future, but there are way better metallic watercolors out there that will make you happier in the long run. I suggest you give the DeDeDe Praise watercolors a skip.
