I tested travel palettes… only one stayed in my bag

I’ve tried a range of travel palettes for urban sketching — from simple metal tins to compact all-in-one kits — to see which ones actually work on location. In this video, I’m not focusing on the paints, but on the palettes themselves: how easy they are to carry, how quick they are to set up, how much space they take up, and whether they get in the way or help the flow of sketching outdoors. I compare several options including a standard metal tin, the Portable Painter Micro, Winsor & Newton field sets, a flask-style palette, and asmaller, more compact designs — that are a bit more fiddly in practice than they first appear. One of the most interesting things I found is that it’s not really about how small a palette is, or how many colours it holds — it’s about how it feels to use. The best travel palettes are the ones that don’t get in the way and make you want to keep sketching. As always, what works for me may not work for you — but hopefully this gives you a better idea of the different options out there, and what to look out for when choosing a palette for sketching on location. Quick note about the Winsor & Newton Travel set — what I should have said in the video is that I did manage to fit in two extra pans (still one fewer than the smaller Pocket Field Box), but then they rattled around a bit, so it wasn’t ideal.
