Japan’s New Problem: Gaijin

Support the channel on Patreon:   / paahtis   Japan's Foreigner Situation is REALLY BAD Over the past few years, one of Japan’s biggest new problems has been foreigners. From nuisance influencers like Johnny Somali to clueless tourists crowding shrines and trains, Japan’s patience is wearing thin. What started as frustration over overtourism has now turned into something much bigger, a political and cultural backlash that’s reshaping how Japanese people see foreigners altogether. We will be discussing the rise of Sanseito (参政党) a right-wing nationalist party that began as a YouTube channel to the growing anti-Gaijin sentiment online as Japan’s attitude toward outsiders is becoming increasingly hostile. We also explore how nuisance livestreamers, trespassing tourists, and clout-chasers have fueled this shift, and how the Japanese media has amplified these incidents to feed a growing demand for anti-foreigner outrage. But what's also important is OUR role in this. We in the West tend to romanticize Japan and treat it as a flawless utopia while ignoring its social tensions. This endless cycle of idealization and outrage is creating a feedback loop, one where Western defenders of Japan and Japanese nationalists both end up fueling the same resentment toward foreigners. Japan’s new right-wing politics are going extremely viral as the country is fighting over tourism and livestreamers while trying to protect it's national identity. “Land of the Rising Sun” seems to be facing a new kind of darkness. If things keep going like this, the biggest threat to foreigners in Japan might not be Japan itself... it might be us. Business Contact: [email protected]
