Can Japan Address Its Hikikomori Situation?
1.46 million people, 2% of those aged 15 to 62, live in social isolation in Japan today, cut off from work, school and even family, according to a recent Cabinet Office survey. Japan has been struggling to reintegrate them into society. What kinds of factors in the society are being in their way? The Japanese government defines Hikikomori ('ひきこもり') as total withdrawal from society and seeking social isolation or confinement. It also refers to individuals who refuse to leave their parents' house, do not work or go to school and isolate themselves away from society in a single room for a period exceeding six months.
