After his father died of HIV-related complications when Evan was just three years old, the family faced intense judgment and stigma within the congregation, leading them to relocate to a rural "compound" in North Carolina for a fresh start. Growing up, Evan was fueled by the "resurrection hope"—the promise that if he remained obedient and "did more" for the organization, he would eventually be reunited with his father.
