Exposed Brick Texture on Furniture | Jewelry Armoire Makeover

This jewelry armoire makeover was definitely a challenge—and one of my favorites yet. This piece started out as a cherry-finished, very feminine jewelry armoire. I was commissioned to completely transform it into something masculine for a 21-year-old male who owns more chains than he has room for. Making an armoire feel less feminine isn’t exactly easy, but I leaned all the way into texture, depth, and an industrial vibe. To achieve that look, I created a raised stencil design that mimics exposed brick. For the background of the “brick,” I used a WhimsyKel Designs decoupage paper, which added so much character and visual interest. The raised texture itself was made using joint compound tinted with paint, giving it that gritty, dimensional feel. For all of the grungy layering and texture, I used a plethora of Paint Couture paints, building depth and patina throughout the piece. Everything was sealed for durability using Paint Couture Extreme Guard as the top coat. On the inside, I kept it clean and durable with Wise Owl Paint One Hour Enamel. One of my favorite details on this piece is the custom trim. I created a resin casting using Paint Couture’s black casting resin and a Redesign with Prima mould to form a chain design, which I installed around the edges for a bold, masculine touch. To finish it off, I added apothecary-style handles, which really completed the industrial look.
