Kilisenin bulunduğu arazide daha önceleri eski bir Rum Ortodoks mezarlığı ve Aya Yorgi'ye atfedilmiş ahşap bir kilise bulunmaktaydı. Dönemin Rum Ortodoks cemaatinin ihtiyaçlarına karşılık veremediği gerekçesiyle kilisenin mezarlıkla birlikte yıkılıp yerine daha görkemli bir kilisenin yapılması kararlaştırıldı. Rum mimar Potesaros'un çizimlerine dayanarak Vasilaki İoannidis Efendi‘nin inşaatını yürüttüğü binanın, Sultan Abdülaziz döneminde verilen izinle 13 Ağustos 1876’da temelleri atılmıştır. Patrik III. İoakim döneminde, Haç Yortusu'na denk gelen 14 Eylül 1880 Pazar gününde resmi açılışı gerçekleştirilmiştir. Daha önceleri yerinde bulunan mezarlık, 1876 yılında Pangaltı semtine nakledilmiştir. The site where the church now stands previously housed an old Greek Orthodox cemetery and a wooden church dedicated to Saint George. It was decided that the church, along with the cemetery, should be demolished and a more magnificent church built in its place, as it could no longer meet the needs of the Greek Orthodox community of the time. Based on the designs of the Greek architect Potesaros, and with construction overseen by Vasilaki Ioannidis Efendi, the foundations of the building were laid on August 13, 1876, with permission granted during the reign of Sultan Abdulaziz. The official opening took place on Sunday, September 14, 1880, coinciding with the Feast of the Cross, during the patriarchate of Ioakim III. The cemetery, which had previously been located on this site, was relocated to the Pangaltı district in 1876.
