The Simpler I Made This Trip, the Better It Became: Backpacking in Iowa's Loess Hills

This week, I backpacked into a secluded section of Iowa's Loess Hills during one of the hottest and most humid days of the summer. Temperatures hover around 90°F, the humidity is relentless, and there isn't enough wind to move the prairie grass. After hiking over a mile to the edge of a hardwood forest, I clear a small campsite and pitch my tent. The heat quickly teaches me that this isn't a trip for accomplishing big tasks. Digging a fire pit and processing firewood can wait until sunset. Sometimes the best decision is simply to slow down. I also made a mistake by forgetting my insulated cooler bag, forcing a stop at a small-town grocery store. With limited cookware, I improvised dinner: spicy chili dogs loaded with cheese and Frito chips, paired with an inexpensive bottle of red wine. What could have been a disappointment becomes one of the highlights of the trip. The next morning, everything changes. The temperature drops into the 70s, a cool breeze arrives, and the prairie feels completely different. As I enjoy coffee and breakfast, I reflected that this is my 75th video. Looking back over dozens of camping adventures, I realize that the trips I remember most aren't the dramatic ones—they're the simple ones where I slowed down enough to appreciate where I was. Sometimes, enduring a difficult day makes the peaceful morning that follows even sweeter. Thank you for spending another adventure with me. #Camping #Backpacking #LoessHills #SoloCamping #OutdoorCooking #NatureTherapy #CampingLife #SlowLiving #Iowa #Hiking
