Last weekend, Paysandú once again became the center of one of the country's most crowded celebrations: the Encounter with the Patriarch. More than seven thousand horsemen and some 300 partners traveled nearly one hundred kilometers in four days to reach the plateau on the Uruguay River where they paid tribute to José Gervasio Artigas. Approximately 30,000 people participated in the 31st edition of an event that combines tradition, civic religiosity, and popular celebration. This time, the commemoration took on a special meaning as this year marks the 175th anniversary of the hero's death. Mayor Nicolás Olivera, who led the main event, recalled that it was on this same soil where Artigas dreamed of freedom, social justice, and education as a tool for equality. "We don't come to pay tribute to a marble monument, but to his ideas," he said, in a message that sought to connect past and present. The Encounter with the Patriarch began in 1994 with a handful of riders, and today it is the largest cavalcade in the country. What does this tradition mean to Uruguayans?
