The Loretta Young Show - S2 E18 - "Evil For Evil"
Episode # 5418 EVIL FOR EVIL Original airdate: 12-12-54 In this episode, one man’s refusal to obtain much needed surgery for his wife results in death, murder and mob violence. Loretta Young stars as Lynn Roth, the wife of a popular country doctor who stands against a revenge-seeking mob to protect a killer who has taken refuge in her home. Griff Barnett plays Loretta's doctor husband, who in spite of his best efforts can not save the life of a friend's wife. The friend, played by Malcolm Atterbury, turns on him, accusing the doctor of murder and vowing revenge. Griff Barnett was perhaps best known to radio listeners for playing the Rexall family druggist in commercials on The Phil Harris-Alice Faye Show in the late 1940s and early 1950s. He also appeared in numerous films from the 1930s through the 1950s, including To Each His Own (1946), Apartment for Peggy (1948), and Pinky (1949). He frequently played doctors or lawyers on TV. Barnett died at home in El Monte, California, on January 12, 1958, aged 73 Malcolm Atterbury, playing Ed Humphrey, the enraged widower, was not only a stage, film, and television actor, but vaudevillian as well. A native of Philadelphia, Atterbury was the son of General William Wallace Atterbury, president of Pennsylvania Railroad. Atterbury made frequent appearances on this, and other television series including; CBS's Perry Mason, Gunsmoke, The Twilight Zone, Window on Main Street, The Asphalt Jungle, Straightaway, Bonanza, Hazel, The Odd Couple, Sheriff of Cochise, The Fugitive, State Trooper, Rescue 8, Fury, The Man from Blackhawk, Happy, and The Tall Man This episode also features Joan Darwell (although uncredited on screen) who appeared in more than one hundred major motion pictures spanning half a century. She is perhaps best-remembered for her portrayal of the matriarch and leader of the Joad family in the film adaptation of John Steinbeck's The Grapes of Wrath, for which she received the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress. In her final years, Darwell's health was poor. She died August 13, 1967, at the Motion Picture & Television Country House and Hospital in Woodland Hills, from a myocardial infarction at the age of 87.
