The Loretta Young Show - S6 E4 - "The 20 Cent Tip"
Episode # 5805 THE 20-CENT TIP Original airdate: 11-09-58 Like so many episodes in this series, this one draws attention to a situation that was as important in 1958 as it is today, the pay and respect we give to our nation's teachers. In this program marking the start of National Education Week, Loretta Young stars as Margaret Hutchens, a widowed mother of two who works as a part-time waitress in order to supplement her income as a high school history teacher. When some of Miss Hutchens' students discover she is leading a "double life" in order to support her family, they use this information to undermine her authority. Her usefulness as a teacher is weakened and she resigns. But suddenly there is a change in the community when her students start living some of the tenets they have been taught. Also in the cast playing her principal, Mr. Wilcox, is Howard Wright. Wright was an actor known for appearances on The Twilight Zone (1959), The Spider (1958) and Headline Hunters (1955). He died on July 2, 1990 in Los Angeles County, California at age 96. The part of Casey , owner of the grill where Margaret holds a second job, is played by Walter Barnes. Barnes was an American football player and actor. He played professional football in the National Football League (NFL) for the Philadelphia Eagles and college football at Louisiana State University. He was an actor in both American and European films. He appeared in several films with John Wayne, Lex Barker and Clint Eastwood. Barnes was one of the many American actors who moved to Italy in the early 1960s. Barnes returned to the United States in 1969 and appeared in more films and television series, which included The High Chaparral. His friendship with Clint Eastwood on Rawhide later lead him to several roles in Eastwood's films. He retired from acting in 1987 and became increasingly ill due to his Diabetes. Barnes died on January 6, 1998 at age 79. Trivia fact: Barnes was the father of German actress Lara Wendel, who was born Daniela Barnes. The part of Steve. one of the sympathetic students who comes to understand Miss Hutchins' situation, is played by Malcolm Cassell. Cassell was born on March 16, 1939 in Los Angeles. He is best known for appearances on Room for One More (1952), The Rifleman (1958) and Pirates of Tortuga (1961). He later became a talent agent. Trivia fact: When Freddie Leisten outgrew the role of John on the CBS series Life With Father, he was replaced by Malcolm Cassell. Steve's girlfriend, Janey, is portrayed by Donna Boyce. Donna Jo Boyce was born on August 4, 1938 in Fairmont, West Virginia known for her performances in The Breaking Point (1950), Harbor Command (1957) and Fireside Theatre (1949).
