LAST CHANCE to visit this Japanese Castle before DEMOLITION 🏯 | Nagoya Castle Japan with Sakura
Nagoya Castle (名古屋城, Nagoya-jō) is one of the most famous Japanese castles (日本の城, Nihon no shiro) and a highlight of any Nagoya travel guide (名古屋 旅行, Nagoya ryokō). Located in the heart of Nagoya City (名古屋市, Nagoya-shi) in Aichi Prefecture (愛知県, Aichi-ken), the castle has a long and dramatic history. It was originally constructed in the early 1600s during the Edo period (江戸時代, Edo jidai) by order of the Tokugawa shogunate (徳川将軍, Tokugawa shōgun). At the time, it was one of the largest and most strategically important fortresses in Japan, symbolized by its glittering golden shachihoko (鯱)—mythical tiger-headed carp that crown the roof of the main keep. The original castle was tragically destroyed in World War II air raids in 1945. The current keep, built in 1959, was reconstructed from concrete, making it one of the most ambitious postwar restorations of a Japanese castle (日本の城). However, despite its impressive size and commanding presence, the concrete structure does not meet modern earthquake safety standards. For this reason, the main tower was closed to the public in 2018, and the city of Nagoya (名古屋市) has decided to proceed with Nagoya Castle demolition (名古屋城 解体, Nagoya-jō kaitai) by 2030 in order to rebuild a more historically faithful wooden reconstruction (名古屋城 再建, Nagoya-jō saiken). While the main keep has been off-limits, visitors can still enjoy the stunning Honmaru Palace (本丸御殿, Honmaru Goten), which was recently restored to its full Edo-period (江戸時代) splendor. Inside, you’ll find breathtaking golden screens, traditional tatami rooms, and exquisite artwork showcasing the refined lifestyle of the Owari lords. This restoration is considered one of the finest examples of Japanese craftsmanship in modern times. Visiting Nagoya Castle (名古屋城) is not just about history—it’s also about atmosphere. In spring, the grounds are transformed during cherry blossom season (桜, sakura / 花見, hanami), when hundreds of blooming cherry trees surround the castle walls and reflect in the wide moat. Food stalls (屋台, yatai) line the pathways, selling local specialties, festival snacks, and seasonal treats, creating a lively, festive atmosphere that attracts both locals and international tourists. You may even spot the unique sight of deer in the castle moat (名古屋城 鹿, Nagoya-jō shika), adding to the magical experience of walking around this iconic landmark. For anyone interested in Nagoya sightseeing (名古屋 観光, Nagoya kankō) or planning a Japan travel vlog (日本旅行, Nihon ryokō), Nagoya Castle is a must-see attraction. It’s a rare chance to witness the blend of history, culture, and everyday Japanese life all in one place. Because the current concrete keep is set for demolition in 2030 (名古屋城 解体 2030), this is truly the last chance to walk around Nagoya Castle (名古屋城) in its current form before it disappears forever. If you’re compiling a Nagoya travel guide (名古屋 旅行ガイド), searching for the best things to do in Nagoya (名古屋 名所, Nagoya meisho), or exploring Edo period castles in Japan (江戸時代 城, Edo jidai shiro), this destination should be at the very top of your list. The story of Nagoya Castle—its destruction, reconstruction, closure, and planned rebirth—makes it one of the most fascinating Japanese castles (日本の城) to visit today. 📌Turn on CC for Subtitles. ----------------------------------------------------------- 🥚Timestamps 00:00 Intro 00:22 Location 01:29 Food Stalls 02:13 Watchtower 02:56 Deer 03:26 Honmaru Palace 04:04 Nagoya Castle Keep 05:38 Cherry Blossom 06:44 Stone Field & Tomb 07:50 Castle Gardens 09:05 Back of the Castle 09:20 Food Stalls 10:01 Nikuman / Steamed Meat bun 10:37 Outro ----------------------------------------------------------- 🥚Locations ⦁ Nagoya Castle, Nagoya, Japan 名古屋城, 名古屋市, 日本 ----------------------------------------------------------- 🥚Tamago's Gear ⦁ DJI Osmo Pocket 3 ⦁ Canon EOS D Mark II ⦁ Sony FDR-AX700 ----------------------------------------------------------- 🥚 Disclaimers ⦁ Prices are calculated on date of publishing. ⦁ Prices can vary based on the seasons. ----------------------------------------------------------- #japan #nagoya #nagoyacastle #sakura #japantravel #japaneseculture
