In his novel "Clouds Above the Hill," Ryotaro Shiba highlights that Japan's victory in the Russo-Japanese War, which astonished the world, was a narrow, hard-fought victory achieved through a meticulous examination of the process. This victory stemmed from the fact that the then-Israeli Russia was in its final stages, repeatedly employing foolish strategies that led to inevitable defeat, while Japan's meticulous and multifaceted tactics and diplomacy proved successful. In the afterword, Shiba describes how, after the Russo-Japanese War, the Japanese people and nation absolutized the victory, becoming complacent and believing that divine Japan could not be defeated, leading to its entry into the Pacific War. He then writes a memorable passage: "If defeat instills reason in the people, and victory drives them to madness, then from the perspective of a nation's long history, the outcome of wars is truly a mysterious thing." War is a serious, all-out conflict that determines the rise or fall of a nation and its people, with both sides genuinely risking their lives. However, even the outcome of such a war, viewed from the perspective of a nation's long history, is "truly mysterious"—it's difficult to say which side was better. Life is the same. There are adversities such as setbacks and failures, and also favorable times such as success and praise. When we experience setbacks, we despair, believing it's the end of our lives; when we receive praise, we become ecstatic. But even this, viewed from the perspective of a long life, is unclear—whether favorable times or adversity represent true happiness. Some become complacent in their favor, forgetting the essence of life and living a life of idleness and bliss, while others are spurred on by adversity, using it as an opportunity to seek true happiness.
