Today (August 15th) marks the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II. This episode of "Weekend Recommendation! Live" was broadcast live from the Chiran Special Attack Peace Hall in Chiran Town, Minamikyushu City. The Chiran Special Attack Peace Hall displays a variety of materials related to the kamikaze pilots, and is visited by many people from all over Japan. It was also during the Obon holiday period, so people of all ages were renewing their feelings for peace. Chiran was the base for the kamikaze pilots during the war, and in 1945, towards the end of the war, kamikaze planes took off over Okinawa, where the U.S. military was deployed, claiming the lives of 439 young men. To pass on this tragic history to future generations, the museum displays related materials, including portraits and personal belongings donated by the families of the pilots. To mark the 80th anniversary of the end of the war this year, some of the exhibits were renovated in July. "Chiran Sky," a three-dimensional diorama of the Chiran area that has been on display since the museum opened, has been redesigned to be more visually appealing using projection mapping and animation. By overlaying the current Chiran scenery on top of the diorama, for example, the old runway appears at the touch of a button, making it feel even more realistic. During the live broadcast, curator Yamaki gave an explanation about the Ki-68 "Hayabusa" fighter plane used in kamikaze attacks. On both sides of the life-size model of the Ki-68 "Hayabusa" fighter plane on display are photographs of all the members who lost their lives in the kamikaze attacks, as well as letters and other personal belongings. In the second half of the broadcast, the museum also introduced the current special exhibition, "The Lives of Kamikaze Pilots as Seen Through Materials in Our Collection."
