A 1940s Cottage Kitchen Day | Cooking Marrow, Polishing Silver & Putting Things Right

A slow day in my 17th-century English cottage kitchen, cooking marrow from the garden, polishing silver, and quietly putting a few things right. In this video you will find: an authentic 1940s recipe WWII ration cooking, polishing vintage silver I’ve always felt that old kitchens have a way of slowing us down. Perhaps it’s because they’ve witnessed thousands of ordinary days, when life followed a gentler rhythm. They also remind me of something else: people expected to care for what they already had. Pots were scrubbed, silver was polished, vegetables from the garden became supper, and very little was taken for granted. Today I’m cooking marrow from the garden using a recipe that would have been familiar during the 1940s, polishing silver that’s been loved for generations, and simply taking the time to put things right around the cottage. They’re all small jobs, but together they create a gentle rhythm that feels surprisingly satisfying. Living in a 17th-century cottage by the sea on the Exmoor coast, I’m often reminded that many of the old traditional ways were were practical, economical, and worth holding on to. I hope this quiet day in my kitchen encourages you to slow down with me for a little while. Filmed in my 17th-century cottage on the Exmoor Coast, England. Samantha #traditionalhomemaking #slowliving #1940s #cottagelife #englishcottage Cheesy Lentil-Stuffed Marrow Boats Ingredients 1 medium marrow 200g (about 1 cup) dried green or brown lentils, rinsed 1 large onion, finely chopped 2 garlic cloves, minced 1 tin chopped tomatoes (or a couple of fresh chopped tomatoes with a splash of water) Herbs (thyme, sage, or mixed herbs) A generous handful of grated Cheddar or Red Leicester cheese Salt and black pepper A little dripping, margarine, or oil for frying Method 1. Prepare the marrow: Cut the marrow in half lengthwise and scoop out the seeds and fibrous core. Lightly oil the inside of the shells and place them on a baking tray. 2. Cook the lentils: Simmer the lentils in a saucepan of water until tender (about 20–25 minutes). Drain any excess water and set aside. 3. Make the filling: Melt the dripping or oil in a frying pan and gently fry the chopped onion and garlic until softened. Stir in the chopped tomatoes, herbs, and cooked lentils. Season well with salt and black pepper. 4. Stuff the marrow: Pack the lentil mixture into the hollowed-out marrow halves. Sprinkle generously with the grated cheese. 5. Bake: Bake in a preheated oven at 200°C (Gas Mark 6) for 25–30 minutes, until the marrow is tender when pierced and the cheese is bubbling and golden. This hearty vegetarian marrow recipe is inspired by traditional British allotment cooking and the thrifty spirit of the 1940s. If you make it, I’d love to know how you get on! Running this channel requires me to pay subscriptions for a music licence and video editing software as well as techno things like ssk sticks to store film files on. All boring stuff but without them my videos wouldn’t exist! I’m really grateful for any small tips through the ‘buy me a coffee’ scheme here: https://www.ko-fi.com/samanthalovestosew
