I followed 1940s Frugal Cleaning & Beauty Hacks... and rated them
In this video, I explore the ingenious ways ordinary people improvised during shortages in 1940s Britain, testing everything from household cleaning methods to wartime beauty tricks to see whether they still hold up today. And honestly, you may be surprised by the hack that scored the highest. We begin in the home with crushed eggshells used as an abrasive cleaner, applied with a makeshift dishcloth fashioned from old nylon stockings, before trying tea dregs from our classic Brown Betty teapot to restore shine to polished wood. I also test powdered milk as a substitute for the great British cup of tea. Then we move onto wartime beauty and self-care: bicarbonate of soda dusted under the arms as an antiperspirant, olive oil as a skin softener, soot from the fireplace as eyeshadow, and beetroot juice as lipstick (or perhaps more accurately… lip stain). And of course, no 1940s beauty experiment would be complete without the infamous gravy browning used to mimic stockings, complete with an eyebrow pencil seam drawn up the back of the leg! Some of these hacks were surprisingly effective, others perhaps best left in the past, but all of them reveal the creativity, resilience, and make-do spirit of our grandparents and great-grandparents during an incredibly challenging era.
