Dormo nel bivacco più alto d'Italia - Alba a 4000m
Capanna Margherita needs no introduction. It is undoubtedly one of the most famous mountain huts in the world and, personally, one of the most scenic and breathtaking places I have ever seen. In this episode, we will skin up in spring, when the snow is still great and the cold is still biting. For the ascent, we will stop at the Felice Giordano bivouac, the highest bivouac in Italy at 4,167m. Lacking acclimatization, with a splitting headache and freezing temperatures, we will cross the glacier at night to reach the Queen of the Alps at dawn. From 4,500m, we will dive into a non-stop ski descent all the way down to 1,400m, for a total of 3,000m of vertical drop. A bit of history: Inaugurated on September 4, 1893, the hut owes its name to Queen Margherita of Savoy, who climbed it on foot in August of that same year to spend the night, an event that brought international fame to the structure. From the very beginning, the project was conceived not just as a shelter for mountaineers, but as a true high-altitude laboratory. In the early 1900s, thanks to the studies of physiologist Angelo Mosso, it became a world center of excellence for mountain medicine and meteorology. Completely rebuilt between 1977 and 1980, the current building is a state-of-the-art structure covered in copper and grounded to act as a Faraday cage—the only way to protect it from lightning given its completely exposed position. Today, in addition to hosting mountaineers in an area where oxygen pressure is reduced by 40% compared to sea level, Capanna Margherita remains a fundamental outpost for scientific research by the CNR and European universities on climate change and glaciology.
