Mongolia is embarking on a bold plan to shift its capital city. It wants to restore the glory of Khakhorum, an ancient site that once served as the centre of the Mongol empire under Genghis Khan. The other potential benefit — bringing relief to its existing capital, which is overcrowded and polluted. Ulaanbaatar was designed for a quarter of a million people, and it now struggles to contain six times that number. That is half of Mongolia's population packed into 0.001% of the country's land.
